Aotearoa Conference "Unfitness to Stand Trial" - 9 & 10 Oct 2017

9-10 OCT 2017, AUT – CENTRE FOR NON-ADVERSARIAL JUSTICE

AUT’s Centre for Non-Adversarial Justice is running a two-day conference titled “Perils and Portents of Unfitness to Stand Trial: International and Comparative Perspectives”. The conference is being run with support from AUT, the New Zealand Law Foundation and the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law (ANZAPPL).

The event, to be held at AUT, aims to foster an inter-disciplinary and collegial environment in which to discuss and debate a range of theoretical and practical concerns in which the issue of unfitness to stand trial may give rise.

Unfitness to stand trial has become a significant and commonly litigated trial issue in many common law jurisdictions and involves troubling questions of policy, culture and legislation. The conference will benefit from the wisdom and insights of leading international scholars and clinicians familiar with the range of issues around unfitness to plead, through the presentation of keynote addresses and panel discussions.
