| Description | New Zealand Red Cross, in conjunction with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will run the fourth International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Court Competition for New Zealand law students in December 2015. This is the only competition of its type in New Zealand; it is an opportunity to promote better awareness of IHL issues among law faculties and students at universities throughout New Zealand. It also allows for law students to meet and interact with IHL practitioners in New Zealand, such as those from New Zealand Red Cross, Defence and other legal professionals, whose representatives volunteer their time to help run and judge the competition.
The national competition is scheduled to take place in Wellington over two days on 4 and 5 December 2015. Day one consists of an afternoon IHL scenario-based activity for participating law schools, modelled on the international Jean-Pictet Competition in IHL. This allows the students to meet one another, interact with IHL practitioners from New Zealand Red Cross, and ‘warm up’ into the subject matter. Students are also invited to attend the annual ‘IHL Colloquium’ organised by Victoria University of Wellington for the morning of the first day. This colloquium, although organised separately, is coordinated so as to fit in appropriately with the Moot planning.
The formal competition takes place on day two. Preliminary rounds are held at Victoria University, with legal practitioners from New Zealand Red Cross, New Zealand Defence Force, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade etc. volunteering their time as judges. The final round for the two top teams is held at the Old High Court, and is open to the public. The panel of judges for the final round is of exceptional calibre, with Sir Kenneth Keith, Sir Geoffrey Palmer and Lt-Col Justin Emerson (New Zealand Defence Force Head of Legal) confirmed for the bench. A reception and award ceremony will be hosted for students, teaching staff and judges that evening. In 2014 this was kindly hosted by the Swiss Ambassador to New Zealand, himself a former ICRC Delegate and IHL trainer of the Swiss Army. | Description | The AMINZ conference is NZ’s pre-eminent dispute resolution conference, covering all areas of dispute resolution. The conference is structured to generate debate within the dispute resolution community, with policy makers, stakeholders and the NZ public. The value of it is more than the 2 ½ days it takes, but in the on-going debate and learning it stimulates.
The theme of the 2019 Christchurch conference is “Still Making It Work”. The focus will be disaster dispute resolution, including climate change and earthquakes. Conference sessions will include the legal and policy repercussions of disasters. We intend this conference to be ground-breaking and pivotal. We have over the last 10 years delivered conferences that have achieved a broadening of the debate on important subjects and helped to form policy and change in New Zealand.
