Details Of Applicant

Project Description

Relevance To The Objectives Of The Law Foundation

You should demonstrate how the proposed activity falls within one or more of the Foundation's objectives set out in the extract from Clause 12 of the Trust Deed which is provided in the appendix.

You must include a budget providing full details of each category of expenditure. As a minimum, the budget should include details of all items of expenditure. The following are some examples:

  • Salaries
  • Travel costs
  • Data processing
  • Printing/stationery
  • Postage
  • Data Analysis
  • Equipment
  • Phone/Fax charges
  • Publication costs

For Research Grant applications, applicants do not require this level of detail on budget items at the preliminary abstract stage.

Note: Generally the Foundation will not fund the costs of incidental overheads or major capital expenditure.

Take special care in formulating your budget, as it will undergo careful scrutiny by Foundation staff and the Trustees. The necessity for each item should be justified, so that it is clear that the applicant has proposed the most cost efficient alternative. For example, the cost of research assistance should be commensurate with the level of skills required for the proposed tasks.

Research Grant applicants may request funding for teaching 'buyout' when applicable and this will be considered.

Proposals involving printing, the purchase of equipment or services should, if possible, include three written quotations. These requirements should be treated as GST inclusive for the purposes of the funding application.

GST

Please indicate whether or not you are GST registered. If you are GST registered please state all amounts as GST exclusive and provide your GST number.

In most cases the Foundation regards grants as unconditional gifts for the purposes of the provisions of the Goods & Services Tax Act 1985. As such there is no provision for a GST component in the grant and the grant will be paid net of GST.

Partial Funding

The Foundation will partially fund projects that meet the criteria for funding providing the Trustees are satisfied that the balance of funding is in place and that the project can and will proceed.

You should confirm if other sources of funding have been obtained or sought, and the amount. You should also give details of any effort made to find funding before approaching the Foundation.

Project Timetable

You must include a detailed timetable of the proposed activity, including the date on which the project is to commence, the anticipated dates of commencement and completion of each major stage, and the proposed date of completion of the overall project.

It is recommended that you give careful consideration to the accuracy of your timetable. Once successful, Trustees are usually insistent that projects are completed within your stated timeframes and progress payments under the grants are dependent on this.

The Trustees will look critically at projects which, in part or whole, will be carried out by people who already have significant demands on their time and, in particular, those in full time employment. You need to show clearly that such people are in a position to keep to the proposed timetable.

Personal Details

Include a curriculum vitae or resume of the person or persons who will be primarily responsible for carrying out the project.

You should also include any other details that demonstrate any special knowledge or interest in the project (of you or any of your project team) and details of personal referees who can confirm that knowledge.

Referees

Two types of references should be provided with the application:

  1. It is expected that project references will be provided. Full details together with copies of relevant supporting material should be provided from persons or organisations who could expect to benefit from the project. Endorsement by such will materially assist the Trustees in their consideration of applications.
  2. References are required for the principal personnel involved in the project to demonstrate that they have the requisite ability/experience/expertise to carry out the project successfully.

On the cover sheet you are asked to provide the names of at least two of your referees who could be contacted if the Foundation decides it is necessary. It is not the norm for referees to be contacted, as the Foundation prefers to receive written references at the time of application, but occasionally it is necessary to discuss projects with referees.

Details Of Dissemination

You need to give full details of distribution arrangements and satisfy the Trustees that the resource will reach the target group.

Project Authorisation

The application cover sheet or the application document must be signed by an authorised official on behalf of the applicant or host institution.

In the case of applications received through Universities or like institutions, applications must be authorised by the Vice Chancellor (Research) (or equivalent).
