Law contest grants

14th May 2009

The team representing New Zealand in the International Negotiation Competition in Chicago in July has received a New Zealand Law Foundation grant of $17,000 towards its costs.

Jason Cooper and Tim Hains from Canterbury University, coached by Otago University law lecturer Selene Mize will travel to the event.

Jason and Tim qualified for the contest when they won the Buddle Findlay National Negotiation Competition last year.

Selene Mize was also the coach of the team that contested the Louis M Brown International Client Counselling Competition at the University of Nevada in April.

The team, which was assisted by a Law Foundation grant of $15,000, comprised Victoria University students Adam Edwards and Henry Clayton, who qualified by winning the 2008 Russell McVeagh Client Interviewing Competition.

They narrowly missed a place in the semi-finals when they came second out of the three teams in each of their preliminary rounds.

New Zealand's Commonwealth Law Moot team also received Law Foundation funding with a $4,000 grant.

Jamie Eng and Oliver Searle from Victoria University, coached by Professor Campbell McLachlan QC competed in the event, held in conjunction with the 16th Commonwealth Law Conference in Hong Kong in April.
