For only the third time in the history of the Prize, there are joint winners of the Cleary Memorial Prize.
Colin Fife and Jeremy Johnson, both graduates of Canterbury University Law School, are this year's winners and their lives have followed similar educational paths.
Both Colin and Jeremy graduated from Canterbury University with an LLB (1st Class Hons) and a BA. Colin was admitted to the Bar in November 2007 and Jeremy in 2008.
Both winners were educated at Christ's College Canterbury and both were awarded the school's Maling Prize for Outstanding Service. Colin was Head of House and a prefect, and Jeremy was Deputy Head Prefect and Deputy Head of House.
Colin currently works as a solicitor in the corporate and commercial law team of Chapman Tripp, and was a former Judge's Clerk at the Court of Appeal.
Colin is an elected member of the NZ Council of Legal Education, Member (ex officio) of NZ Law Students' Association and leader of the National Education Policy Development Subcommittee.
Colins intends to study for his LLM in 2010 at Oxford.
Jeremy works as a solicitor in Wynn Williams & Co., Christchurch and was nominated for the Prize by senior partner, Peter Whiteside.
Jeremy is Vice-Chancellor of the Diocese of Christchurch, and a Life Member of the NZ Schools' Debating Council Inc.
