Huakina Conference: the Fabric of New Zealand Society

~~~~26-27 JUNE 2017, VUW & UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO
The aim of this conference is to discuss the legal case Huakina Development Trust v Waikato Valley Authority [1987] 2 NZLR 188 – the first case to explicitly require the Treaty of Waitangi to be taken into account in decision-making. The conference will consider the social context and significance of the case at its 30th anniversary in June 2017. The goal is to celebrate the successes of the case, provide some insights into it and its social setting, and discuss its significance.
The conference is being co-organised by VUW Faculty of Law and University of Waikato Te Piringa Faculty of Law, with the collaboration of the Waikato-Tainui Te Arataura – the Executive body of Waikato-Tainui – and Te Mata Haut? Taketake – the M?ori and Indigenous Governance Centre at Waikato University. It will be held at the Waikato-Tainui College for Research and Development at Hopuhopu.
